GoPro Max vs Hero 10 is a showdown of two action cameras. Both are great for taking photos and videos, but which one is better? GoPro Max has a higher price tag, but it also has features that make it worth the extra money. Hero 10, on the other hand, is more affordable and still takes great photos and videos.
GoPro Max
The GoPro Max was released in 2019 and is considered one of the best action cameras ever made. The GoPro Max is unique among action cameras in that it is both an action camera and a 360 camera. It implies that you have complete control over the situation.
GoPro Max provides various functions that may be used at any time and in any location.
GoPro Hero10
GoPro’s newest action camera, the Hero10, was released in 2021. It’s not a 360 camera, but it’s one of the best action cameras ever manufactured, and it’s packed with cool features. Like the GoPro Max before it, this camera can be used whenever and anywhere you want.
Specs
Table could not be displayed. Before we get into the details, let’s look at the main differences between the two cameras. The Hero 10 is a single lens action camera with two screens, a built-in mount, and various video and photo choices. It’s a top-of-the-line camera for the types of films we’re used to seeing on YouTube, and it’s pretty simple to operate.
The Max is a unique 360 camera that employs two lenses to record the whole 360-degree field of view, allowing you to capture everything around you at once. This camera can also be used for action and vlogging. However, the end product will require a little more editing. On the plus side, you can be inventive.
GoPro Hero 10 vs GoPro Max: Video
Because both of these cameras are mainly utilized for video, we’ll start our comparison there. GoPro cameras are well-known for being action cameras, but I believe they are also excellent for vlogging. Both cameras are superior in both areas, but for different reasons.
The Hero 10 can shoot a 5.3K definition video at 60 frames per second; additional settings include 4K @ 120 frames per second and 2.7K @ 240 frames per second. This is GoPro’s best resolution camera to date, and the ability to capture at 60 frames per second is a significant improvement.
The GP2, GoPro’s latest processor, makes this feasible. Better colors, higher resolution, and additional frame rate options are now possible. This processor is the camera’s brain, which makes it (possibly) the best action camera currently available.
The video quality of Hero 10 is quite excellent, considering how small it is. The image is incredibly sharp because of the 5.3K resolution, and the colors are vivid without being artificial. I recorded all of my test videos with the built-in auto settings, but many manual controls will let you change your video based on the situation.
The Max can record video at 5.6K resolution at 30fps and 3K at 60fps. While the 5.6K resolution is higher than the 5.3K of the Hero 10, the quality is not quite as outstanding. The 5.6K must cover a 360-degree field of vision, but the 5.3K in the Hero 10 must only cover about 200 degrees. This may be complex, but the Hero 10 footage is ultimately sharper and more precise.
So, if the video quality isn’t as good, why would you choose the Max? One reason is the genuinely unique shots that a 360 camera can produce.
These types of shots are impossible to achieve with the Hero 10, so employing a 360 camera is so creative and intuitive. Although it takes more effort to learn how to edit these videos, I believe the end product is worthwhile. See how to edit and what you can create with the GoPro editing software and the Max in the video below.
Stabilization
It’s not just video quality that determines whether an action camera is good or bad; it’s also how well it can maintain video stability. GoPro has put a lot of effort into its stabilization technology, and its hardware and software are among the best in the industry.
Hyper smooth 4.0, GoPro’s fourth-generation stabilization software, is included with the Hero 10 and performs admirably.
When the most excellent stabilization settings are active, video quality suffers slightly as it zooms insignificantly, but it’s well worth it for action shots. All but the most extreme movements will be handled by Hero 10. Even an Action mode prepares everything for flawless moving pictures.
Because the GoPro Max is a few years older than the Hero 10, it only has the second generation of Hypersmooth; nonetheless, Max’s stabilization skills are superior.
Because of the information offered by the two lenses, 360 cameras are naturally good at stabilizing footage. When shooting action shots with the Max, it almost appears as if you’re using professional stabilization equipment. Check out some of my GoPro Max review video images to see what I mean.
Max Hero Mode
Hero Mode is one GoPro Max feature to consider. This mode allows you to film a standard, non-360 video with just one of the two lenses, thereby turning the Max into two cameras in one. The maximum resolution in Hero mode is 1440p@ 30fps or 1080p@ 60fps.
While the video resolution isn’t as good as the Hero 10, it’s an excellent addition to a camera that already offers a lot.
These two cameras are excellent for capturing various types of videos, but they will be used differently. The Hero 10 is perfect for high-resolution photos and action footage. The Max is fantastic for creative photos and inventiveness, but the quality will never compare.
GoPro Hero 10 vs GoPro Max: Photography
You’re unlikely to buy either of these cameras for their photography capabilities. A contemporary phone will undoubtedly do a better job and provide more possibilities if you have a current phone. Having the ability to take some half-decent stills is still an excellent addition.
The difference between the two cameras is once again quality vs. creativity. With the Max, you can capture entire panoramas, 360-degree pictures, and regular images with just one lens. Photos taken with the Max have a maximum resolution of 18 megapixels and aren’t exceptionally sharp, but you can do a lot with them.
The Hero 10 has a more excellent resolution of 23 megapixels, resulting in crisper photographs with a more comprehensive dynamic range. The Hero 10 is better for conventional photos, but you don’t have as many creative alternatives. Both cameras offer HDR modes and the ability to take RAW photographs for the most excellent quality.
GoPro Hero 10 vs Go Pro Max: Design
GoPro cameras’ durable and efficient design is well recognized, and these two cameras are no exception. The Hero 10 and Max are waterproof without needing an additional case, and they are coated in a robust and grip-able plastic that will withstand a few bumps and scrapes.
The Hero 10 is the more compact and lighter, with a larger touchscreen on the back and a secondary screen on the front. At the back of the Max, there is only one smaller touchscreen.
Two lenses protrude from the front of the camera on the Max. These fish-eye lenses allow the camera to capture 360 degrees of the scene. These are incredibly fragile and will break if the camera is dropped; thankfully, the Max comes with lens shields.
Both cameras include built-in mounts that operate with the various accessories and add-ons that GoPro and others have previously produced. These enable both cameras to be utilized and attached to almost anything.
Both of these cameras are well-designed, durable, and adaptable to various situations. The Hero 10 is the less fragile of the two and has a more user-friendly screen.
Other Features
The Hero 10 has three microphones, each with superior noise reduction technologies. Compared to the previous version, this version has an additional microphone, and the difference is evident. The sound quality isn’t as good as a dedicated mic, but it’s more than adequate for vlogs.
The Max includes six microphones, allowing you to record ambisonic audio. This camera’s audio quality is quite good, and I’ve never found the need to use a separate microphone.
The Hero 10’s battery lasts around an hour of continuous shooting, while the Hero Max’s lasts 45 minutes. Each camera will stay around half a day of sporadic shooting. Both have replaceable batteries, so you can buy extras and swap them out.
The Hero 10 features a built-in webcam that can be used with a laptop or computer. This is a fantastic feature for people looking for a higher-quality zoom call, and I’ve found it handy. There is no webcam model on the Max.
Price Tag
Buying pricey things has become a hobby for specific individuals, but I believe that everyone should start with the budget costs that are first affordable. I am speaking professionally and personally. These are high-end action cameras, and it would be strange if they were inexpensive, yet there is a minor difference.
The GoPro Max is a little cheaper than the GoPro Hero10, but the difference isn’t significant, considering the price difference is only $50. However, if you believe that $50 is enough to choose one, I think you will enjoy GoPro Max.
