3. External Alterations
- Power Button
On the exterior of the radio, there are a couple of adjustments to be aware of. The first is that the critical power switch. With old versions of this Taranis, this is a slide button. However, taking a page in the Taranis QX7 and X-Lite, it was changed to a button.
To power on the device, hold down the power button, and the LCD will cycle, showing you it is powering up. When the display varies, you can launch the button. To power down the unit, hold down the power button again.
Should you allow it to go while it is biking, then the electricity won’t turn off. This prevents any accidental shut from the radio at the same time you’ve got a version from the atmosphere, which most of us know is only slightly inconvenient…
- Menu Navigation
Additionally, a switch to note is that the scroll wheel on the ideal side of the control. Gone would be the additional three buttons to browse the menu system in OpenTX. The scroll wheels let you FLY throughout the menus (and I genuinely do mean that it is super sensitive).

All these are a definite upgrade to the typical stick finishes on the older X9D Plus and somewhat less stabby (yes, it is a word… it is my term ) than those stuck to the original FrSky Taranis X9D Plus Special Edition.
Granted, the lotus-style stick finishes function better for thumb consumers. However, they do provide positive reinforcement for hybrid and pinch users too.
- Battery Charging
Gone is your barrel plug on the side of this FrSky Taranis X9D Plus SE. On the contrary, it supports the inner charging of Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries through USB. Be aware that no battery includes the transmitter. You’ll have to supply yourself. I am of 2 minds with this, to be fair.
To begin with, I am not too sure about the security of charging a Li-Po interior the radio… call me paranoid. Secondly, FrSky has made it tough to supply a battery to get this radio since there are no 2S selections for Li-Po that provide sufficient durability. The elderly Taranis models could take up to 3S energy, but that is no longer true.
As you may use the NiMH battery the older Taranis models sent together, the USB charging system won’t control it, which means you’ll have to get an alternate means.
4. What Has Not Changed?
With all these modifications, you may ask the question, “What has not changed?”. The general form factor of this FrSky Taranis X9D Plus is nearly the same. With the exclusion of the cutouts for the scroll wheel and the temporary switch, it is the same.

There is not much difference performance-wise in general, coming out of the original FrSky Taranis X9D Plus. And in a means that is a fantastic thing, not needing to adapt to a lot of alterations.
